PHOENIX – Cronkite News projects that Rep. Matt Salmon, R-Mesa, will win his re-election bid over a Democrat opponent.

Early returns show Salmon with a commanding lead.

Salmon has represented Arizona’s 5th Congressional District since 2013. He served the 1st Congressional District between 1995 and 2001.

Salmon serves on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Salmon said he was called to serve for Arizona’s 5th Congressional District after the passage of the Affordable Healthcare Act and the “expansion of government regulation during an economic crisis,” according to his website.

The Democratic candidate, James Wood, campaigned for universal health care coverage, access to high education and immigration reform.
