ORO VALLEY – When investigators looked into the death of 1-year-old Patrick Smith they found he had been given a lethal dose of methadone by his mother. This case was just one of many, according to a Cronkite News investigation that looked into deaths or near-deaths of children in which drugs were involved. Attorney Jorge Franco has filed several lawsuits against the state claiming that officials aren’t doing enough to save children. He argues that some deaths could have been avoided if state workers tasked with protecting children had looked deeper.

A statewide simulcast of the Cronkite News investigative documentary “Hooked: Tracking Heroin’s hold on Arizona” will air Jan. 13.
